A basketball coach I knew as a kid would begin every season at tryouts by holding a ball high over his head with one hand, announcing, “THIS …. is a basketball.”

That’s not a bad way to get started. After all, why assume everyone knows all that you know?

However, here at the World Food Prize symposium “Biofuels and Biofoods: The Global Challenges of Emerging Technologies,” in Des Moines, there are no primers.

Many of those in attendance are scientists and industry experts. And Iowa, the state that corn built, is wild about biofuels. Corn of course is one of the plants that can be processed into biofuel, and the state is caught up in a feverish bid to develop biofuels industries.

Everybody here seems to know all about it. But not all of us do.

So before reporting on some of the bio-fuel specific symposium sessions, let me suggest a pretty good Web site. Eartheasy.com offers a straightfoward explanation of the whole notion of biofuels.
