I recently read a book that, in one chapter, spent some time on the challenges facing us in modern times concerning global issues such as infant mortality, hunger, poverty, etc. What I read made a lot of sense to me.
You see, a hundred years ago we could throw up our hands and declare that no matter how much we care, in the end we simply don't have the right medicine and technology, etc. to solve these problems. So working to end these problems is all fine and good, but in the end it will never be accomplished. It was a limitation that was out of our hands.
Now, however, we DO have the tools to tackle these probems comprehensively and effectively. It's not a physical or technical limitation. Instead it's a limitation of do we WANT to or not?
For the world not to tackle these problems now is a failure of will, not a failure of medicine and technology and all the other tools we have at our disposal.
Sort of like watching TV with a nice cold bottled water in your hand while someone ten feet away from you is dying of thirst.
That ten feet. Wow, it's just too far. Better sit here instead...

that whole ten feet thing really got me. i spent time this weekend at church praying for the world. in that time, i was reminded that the resources are available, but humanity isn't rising to the challenge of helping our brothers and sisters.
