Soccer sensation Ronaldinho, who scored 8 goals and led Brazil to the World Cup in 2002, and his teammate Kaka — arguably the best midfielder in the world, who last week scored his team’s first goal in the World Cup, are both using their international fame to fight global hunger.

Ronaldinho and Kaka have both joined the United Nation’s World Food Program. As his first action as an Ambassador Against Hunger, Ronaldinho will be taking his own amateur soccer team to visit a shanty town outside Bogota, where the WFP provides aid to some 15,000 people, a fraction of the two to three million people displaced by ongoing conflicts between the government and illegally-armed groups.

Ronaldinho, who himself came from poverty, knows first hand the hardships of the favelas, and how soccer can be a postive force in people’s lives. “I hope that as a kid from a poor family who has managed to fulfill his dream, I can inspire other children who are fighting to escape poverty and hunger.”
