I am writing this in honor of my grandaunt who passed away at the age of 87 yesterday. She inspired me to be who I am today.Had she been born in England they would have called her lady Mary.
My grandaunt was the gel that held the entire family togehter through my mother's Diva days as a party girl( working and concious) and her divorce ,she was the rock. Her house was our home even when we lived with our mother. Aunty's house was home.
Aunty's and granpa's(her husband) house was the ideal home. The perfect image of what a home should be like, warm, peaceful, calm, books, values, good behavior, fun, and food. Much of my good conduct I acquired from her.Aunty never drank or smoked. She always encouraged us to stay off the streeth unless it was necessary. She was strict but in a quiet way that ususally started like this "Let me tell you something...". Her presence was commanding; she was over 5'10 inches in height, full eyes with steak lips( cant describe it any other way).
The story began when her mother moved from a local country town to live in a mountain valley. Isolated, the valley was rich in natural resource and so they never were in want of food.Greatgranma Rhoda had only two children, Violet my grandmother and grandaunt Mary.
My mother had to be shared between two sisters. Mother was indeed a pampered little girl who was shipped between the two homes. She would go to school while living with Aunty and Granpa in the city and then spend summers in the country with her mother. She was the only child in the family. And so the tradition lived on where all my mother's children were shared between grandma and aunties. We all moved in with Aunty when granpa died.
Grandpa and Aunty always had there business. Granpa sold meats and Aunty had a restaurant attached to his meat shop.Aunty was an excellent cook. She had even become a reknown cook
Aunty had lived in Canada for three years, while there working for a jewish family they offered to start her in her own restaurant but because of a mild heart condition she had to return home to jamaica and resume her place as the queen of our family.
Her beauty was also impressive to all those who met her including the jewish family with whom she worked. They had a photograph business and took multiple pictures of her.
Aunty's home was so peaceful and serene, it was ideal for studying. My brother became a doctor and I passed all my exames allowing me to attend college .
I love her and miss her. May God take her straight up into heaven.
