- Philip Nelson, 2007 World Food Prize laureate, speaking about an early experiment in which he poured thousands of gallons of fresh chopped tomatoes into a huge germ-free tank to see if he could store the food without refrigeration.

He eventually succeeded and won the prize for his work.

- Former World Food Program head and food prize laureate Catherine Bertini, describing visits to African villages. In much of the underdeveloped world, she said, women find the water, gather and transport the firewood AND do the cooking.
