Africare is a non-profit organization that specializes in African needs with regards to food security and agriculture, as well as health and HIV/AIDS. The organization’s AIDS initiatives include prevention, treatment, and care for orphans. In addition, Africare’s “RAPIDS” project teaches youths how to prevent themselves from contracting the virus. Africare also supports grassroots democracy, works to increase child survival rates, and provides food aid and humanitarian assistance. The organization currently operates in 26 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, but over the past three decades it has delivered more than $540 million in assistance to 36 countries. The majority of Africare’s funding comes from US government grants and the support of charitable foundations. Approximately 92 percent of that funding goes directly to field projects. According to its own description, Africare “is the oldest and largest African-American organization in the field.” Africare celebrated its thirty-fifth anniversary in 2005.
